The Importance of Digital Data Storage and Best Practices

In the beginning, the data that was important to me was in the form of paper, pictures, and on audio cassettes. I used to record the music that I liked from the radio stations at the time. I did not have a computer or access to one. This was all back in the mid to late 80s. I would not be able to get a computer until the mid 90s.

I started writing and recording music in the mid 90s. Some of the music featured here can be found on SoundCloud. Psychotik Orbit Co – SoundCloud . I still have the cassettes and the shoe boxes, however that audio data has been captured via computer audio interface. Outside of those platforms, they are in the clouds as encrypted digital files. There may even be things I have not released.

Thank you for your time and participation.

Over time, I learned that it is important to have a central location for data that is safe, accessible for multiple devices, secured, and redundant.

I used to store my files on the same hard drive as the operating system during the Windows 95 days. I burned my data to a data CD to move it to another computer. I have set up a separate PC just to share the files over the network. I have even purchased a NAS (Network Attached Storage) to share the data over my home network. As I write this, I am shutting down the NAS and selling it while my data sits encrypted, secure, and accessible upon correct credentials and permissions.

If something were to happen here at the residence while my data is sitting on the NAS, how would I benefit? Even though the NAS has 2 drives in a mirror type raid, should they fail, I could be subject to data loss. Forget the cost to acquire, maintain, repair, and power the device. – That could be handled in the form of climate controlled datacenters that have a better budged than I do. I just pay the service fees monthly and could access my data from anywhere in the world with at least a mobile device, internet connection and correct credentials.

The mistakes I have made were relying on storing data on a Hard Drive of a PC running the operating system. Not developing pictures. Not saving pictures from my first digital photo camera. Some data has been lost due to my negligence in these matters.

When that computer crashed and required formatting of the hard drive, my data went with it.

Don’t store data on the same hard drive as the operating system. If you lose the operating system, you still have your data. The operating system can be replaced easier than your data.

Back up your data. No sense in keeping all the golden eggs in one basket.

Consider cloud based options to further protect your data utilizing professional services.

Stay tuned a video on this will be coming up soon.
